What an incredible group of volunteers! We were fortunate that the rain held off during our crucial cleanup effort. Our objective was to tackle a specific abandoned camp that contained thousands of pounds of trash and thousands of needles. In just 60 minutes, we managed to clear about 60% of the debris and over 1,000 needles, although a significant amount of trash and needles remains. We will return to complete the work we started. Additionally, we collected trash from several other abandoned camps along the trail. Currently, this section of the trail between Hilficker Pipe Co. and Herrick Park N’ Ride is in quite poor condition due to the encampments. Fortunately, we are removing more waste than is appearing, but if we don’t maintain our focus on this area, it could quickly become unmanageable. There needs to be a change regarding the litter that accumulates along our delicate and beautiful waterfront trail. A big thank you to the City of Eureka and the Harbor District for providing trucks to help transport the trash.
