9/15/18 Post Cleanup Report California Coastal Cleanup Day

Another California Coastal Cleanup Day done! For our part PacOut Green Team joined forces with Surfrider Humboldt, 124 Redwood Rangers, Lost Coast Rotaract-Eureka, Fortuna Creeks Project, a local women’s walking group and many others for a 90 min. special event. We had 78 volunteers signed up at our event and the women’s walking group who did their own cleanup in the area had another 6-8 volunteers. While we didn’t do the traditional 3 hr event we feel like we were able to accomplish a lot in the 90 min. we spent cleaning up. We covered a lot of ground starting with the general Samoa Beach Park area, which includes the beach, dunes, parking area and roadsides for about a quarter mile north and south of the park entrance. We also had a crew on Vance Ave. which runs under the Samoa Bridge span that lands on the peninsula, and another small crew on the roadsides between the bridge spans on SR 255 that cross Humboldt Bay. We recovered 25 large trash bags full of trash, several pallets, 2 bike frames, a large metal truck muffler, a few syringes, over a hundred cigarette butts, and some recyclable cans, bottles, etc. We estimate the total weight at 700 lb.!

Great job everyone!
